Epilogue by Amir Manor

Epilogue by Amir Manor
The old age is a great cinematic theme. Aging is a daily tragedy that cinema makes visible and transforms into a cathartic spectacle. Such old classics as Umberto D. by De Sica or The Ballad of Narayama by Keisuke Kinoshita pictured old people precisely when they realized they were no longer needed, as if discarded from among the living. The drama returns in a new context of our contemporary civilization: the world is aging and at the same time is ashamed of it. We are constantly exposed to the mirages of eternal youth and never-ending progress. Looking after the elderly, we marginalize and dispose of them at the same time. The social worker visiting an 80-years-old Israeli couple can only evoke Death that comes to check up on them. This is the very core of the drama: the characters of Epilogue belong to the generation of the socialist pioneers, the halutz, who regard the contemporary world as a ravaged place. They encounter other socially rejected people and they witness the death of the utopian community they tried to build sixty years earlier. (Tadeusz Sobolewski)
