Oppressed by her family setting and dead-end school prospects, and tired of having to abide by the neighborhood boys' rules, Marieme starts a new life after meeting a group of 3 free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her dress code, and drops out of school in a bid for acceptance by the girl gang, hoping that this will be a way to freedom.
"Once again, this is a film about young people: about girls. I've returned to the theme of adolescence, or actually where it ends, with four girls who try to live their own youthful lives. It's a different terrain in some ways, yet there's a marked continuity with the issues I dealt with in my previous films: the stirring of desire, the strength of femininity, and the need to escape a fate that's preordained." [Céline Sciamma]

CÉLINE SCIAMMA (1980, Cergy Pontoise, France) got her degree in French and studied screenwriting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Métiers de l'Image et du Son (FEMIS) in Paris. In 2005 she wrote the screenplay for Naissance des pieuvres, which won the 9TH Prix Junior for best screenplay, giving her the possibility to turn it into her first feature film, Water Lilies. She has also collaborated on the screenplays of two short films by Jean-Baptiste de Laubier, Les Premières communions (2004) and Cache ta Joie (2006). Her 2011 film Tomboy won numerous awards, including the Teddy Jury Award at the 2011 Berlinale, while her 2014 film Girlhood was selected for the Directors' Fortnight section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
