Richie has decided he has had enough with life. But as he is attempting to end it all, he gets a phone call from his estranged sister, Maggie. Though they haven't spoken in years, Maggie has found herself in a tough situation and needs Richie to pick up her daughter from school. Richie reluctantly cancels his dark plans and goes to pick up his precocious niece, Sophia, and escorts her home. But when Maggie doesn't return as scheduled, Richie is forced to take care of Sophia for the night.
"I wanted this feature to still take place over one night, like the short film Curfew on which it is based, but with more depth about Richie and about his sister and what she's going through, and more about Sophia and Richie's arc. I liked the idea of exploring a young child full of life, and an adult who still has an inner child buried deep inside him." [Shawn Christensen]

This offbeat journey into one dark night of the soul, following our sort of suicidal protagonist is sparky and fresh enough to avoid falling into US indie cliché. There is also a winning romantic tone to Before I Disappear that isn't mawkish or kitsch, in which, when combined with the emotional resonance of the story, particularly in tough/tender scenes between our unlikely hero and the niece he is forced to protect, there is a pleasing nod to some the best of American Cinema of the 1970's. Carefully wrought, confidentially realised, with a string of excellent performances, Christensen has delivered a genuinely engaging story that slips in some smart black comedy to leave out any potential over-gloominess. [Adrian Wootton]

SHAWN CHRISTENSEN is an Oscar-winning filmmaker, musician, and painter. In 2002, he formed the indie rock band Stellastarr*, releasing two albums on RCA and a third album independently. Before I Disappear is based on his short film, Curfew, which won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2013 Academy Awards.
