Two brothers, as different as night and day in every respect, and their wives, perennially warring with one another, have a tradition of meeting once a month in an expensive restaurant. Their precarious balance is upended when their children do something irreparable.
"I've always been fascinated by families that reproduce, in miniature, the society around them. I come from one of these families myself, a large family that won me over with its enormous contradictions. With La bella gente, and then Balancing Act, I wanted to explore what happens when an external factor disrupts the tranquil, safe existence of a totally ordinary family that seems, at least, to be happy. But in The Dinner I go even further, in an attempt to show what happens when the explosion is set off from within, by the family itself." [Ivano De Matteo]

Like a carefully constructed timer mechanism counting down on a bomb, Ivano De Matteo's film slowly ratchets up the tension as family members observe with love, bemusement and occasional horror their offspring while becoming more and more emotionally distraught. The storytelling construction, pacing and atmosphere are superbly delivered but it's the performances that make I nostri ragazzi so strong. The entire ensemble cast is excellent, with an especially strong characterisation from Alessandro Gassmann as an apparently cold and calculating lawyer who is forced to confront desperately uncomfortable home truths about his family. The result is a surprising and shocking denouement, which makes this a very confident, adult filmmaking entertainment. [Adrian Wootton]

IVANO DE MATTEO began his artistic career in 1990, when he graduated from the theater workshop Il Mulino di Fiora, directed by Perla Peragallo. An actor, director and documentary filmmaker, he co-founded the theater company Il Cantiere with Valentina Ferlan (a writer and screenwriter) in 1993. In 2005 he created the small production company Utopia Film. After his debut short film, Grazietante (1997), he directed the documentary Prigionieri di una fede (Special Mention at the Turin Film Festival). In 2002 he made his feature directorial debut with Ultimo stadio. De Matteo's 2008 film La bella gente won the Grand Prix and the CICAE Award at the Annecy Film Festival. His film Balancing Act premiered at the 2012 Venice Film Festival, in the Horizons section.
