After John's father is struck by a stray bullet, Primo takes it upon himself to verse the young boy in the code of the streets - one founded on respect and upheld by fear. A member of the Bloods since the age of twelve - both in the film and in reality - all Primo has ever known is the streets of Brooklyn. While John questions whether or not to enter into this life, Primo must decide whether to leave it all behind as he vows to become a better husband and father.
"In my films I aim to capture the messiness of life, in order to make the story more real and concrete. My goal is to create a world that felt present, personal and above all human. I invite the chaos of the real into the shooting process because that is, for me, where much of the beauty and the intensity comes from. While this may cause a moment of discomfort resembling vertigo, it also has the potential to disarm just enough to create a deeply human empathy that for me can go beyond the facticity of documentary and the magic of fiction." [Keith Miller]

This tale of everyday gangster life in New York miraculously manages to avoid so many of the cliches surrounding stories set in a inner city environment by its deceptive simplicity of storytelling and its authentic rendition of characters. Five Star's effectiveness is helped no end not only by its believable verité drama - doc style (which through the quality of it's photography still succeeds in being luminescent and cinematically evocative) -, but also by its locations and most of all its actors, who bring an unvarnished believability to their roles. It's also important to recognize the quiet strength of Keith Miller's direction; understated, observant and assured, getting the maximum out of his story and the people who embody it for him. [Adrian Wootton]
